Corporate Culture Continued from page 35 the origin of rules that have stood for a long time. Such rules tend to achieve the status of dogma and dogma is never questioned. That is how he shared this lesson of culture: beware of dogma as it usually isn’t. My friend explained that culture could be thought of as blinds on a window. The sun outside can be harsh and blinding, making it difficult for people to work in a room. By slightly closing the blinds, we can cut some of that harsh light, making it easier to live and work. Unfortunately, the more you close the blinds, the more you cut off the outside world and the more difficult for people inside to see the changing world outside. If you draw the blinds all the way down, you may work in perfect comfort and harmony inside the room, but you will never see the bulldozer that’s about to level your house. The harsh lesson was that a culture not care- fully monitored will inevitably have the blinds drawn down sufficiently that the group will be resistant to change or exhibit a failure to rec- ognize or respond to change. Through my friend, I was able to learn that culture is predictable, and it is not magic. It is a sci- ence, and it is manageable. What tools do you use to measure, man- age, and direct your culture?
