Safety Update Continued from page 69 Currently, students must complete all modules of the PLST in order to be recognized for training, even if their location does not perform some of those tasks. The NATA team worked closely with the professionals on its Safety Committee to take a hard look at the Safety 1st Program and see how we could make changes addressing the areas highlighted by our users. The results of this analysis indicated the need for a complete rebuild of the program and significant changes to the way we manage and pres- ent training. At the core of the rebuild are three key ideas: 1. SUBSCRIPTION ACCESS—Companies will access Safety 1st training for a fixed annual or monthly fee that provides unlimited use of all of the con- tent within the program. This fee will be based upon the number of training slots a company needs and is not impacted by employee turnover. Trainers can focus on the training that an indi- vidual needs at the moment rather than on what the training budget allows them to purchase. 2. RATINGS-BASED APPROACH—Under the cur- rent program, a certificate is issued when an indi- vidual completes the entire program. With the Safety 1st These three factors, when combined, will completely enhance the Safety 1st training program and help move the industry towards a new way of thinking about and accom- plishing training. Throughout our industry, training is often seen as a compliance-related task, needing to check a box to prove we have done something that is required. While there is nothing inherently wrong with the requirement/ compliance model, it can negatively impact the positive benefits of training when it is applied. Instead, we need to view training as individual and team development, investing in our employees to help them become more knowledgeable and safer, as well as increasing their core skills. This type of development can only happen when we move away from a compliance way of thinking and begin to view training as a continuous process that does not end when the require- ment box is checked. The refreshed Safety 1st will provide managers, supervisor and trainers the flexibility and tools needed to develop this new way to approach training. A key component of the Safety 1st rebuild will be a new rebuild, all of our content will be broken into smaller, easy-to-use courses that focus on specific functional areas, such as marshalling or avgas refueling. Students will pursue the specific courses that are needed at that time and will earn ratings as they go rather than once all training is completed. Trainers will have the ability to cus- tomize what courses individual students take and when they take them based upon the current needs of the organization and capabilities of the student. Hands-on training requirements and practical exams will continue to be a part of the program, but will now be focused on individual functional topics instead of on full modules covering multiple areas. 3. REFRESHED CONTENT—The Safety 1st content is being rebuilt from the ground up to include new multimedia and a clean, modern look and feel. The new content will also incorporate the latest in adult learning philosophy to assist in acquisition and retention of knowledge. 70 Learning Management System (LMS) that includes the lat- est in cloud-based user interface design, creating a power- ful yet intuitive tool that allows trainers to provide each student with a customized experience. The new LMS will incorporate frequently requested features, including email notifications for students and administrators, the ability to manage both online and in-person training, and an inte- grated training calendar for students and administrators. The Safety 1st rebuild is currently underway with con- tent development nearing completion and testing for the new LMS scheduled to begin in June. The NATA Safety Committee has developed a list of companies that will partic- ipate in a closed alpha test of the new LMS followed by open beta testing for all interested Safety 1st company participants.
