GA Supports Sustainability: Going Solar at Van Nuys Airport Continued from page 45 airport sustainability. This is a great opportunity to maximize private sector investment in improving the environment through the commit- ment by the airport’s stakehold- ers—we hope to serve as an example to other general aviation airports and businesses to recognize this public-private investment partner- ship in mitigating carbon emissions.” REDUCTION OF 73.3 MILLION LBS OF CO2, 212,700 LBS OF SULFUR DIOXIDE; 14,500 LBS OF ASTHMA PARTICLES The VNY solar power projects will lessen the amount of toxins and noise that airports and aircraft are often condemned for—Van Nuys and its surrounding areas will experi- ence significantly lower levels of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide emissions and asthma-inflicting particles. Additionally, in partner- ship with PCS Energy—the solar provider—the power generated from these initiatives will supply the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power with 100 percent of the energy produced for the next 20 years. The ripple effect of these efforts will solidify VNY’s position as one of California’s leading general aviation airports committed to solar energy production and sustainable business practices. This year, the Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) has designated VNY with carbon reduction accreditation, signifying the airport’s commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. NATA, along with a coalition of international aviation organiza- tions, announced an upcoming event to reaffirm the general aviation industry’s commitment to advanc- ing the development and adop- tion of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel (SAJF). The event—Business Jets Fuel Green: A Step Toward Sustainability, scheduled for January 17, 2019, at the Van Nuys Airport—will demonstrate that SAJF can become a mainstream, drop-in alternative for today’s business avia- tion turbine aircraft. Conventional Jetfuel will be blended with SAJF and will be available for use at the airport during the event. All four fixed-based operators (FBOs) based at VNY will participate in this initiative. The release of the guide, the upcoming airport initiative and other efforts reflect the indus- try’s long-standing commitment to emissions reduction, includ- ing, among other aims, carbon neutrality from 2020 forward.
